This is especially important when research involves child participants.
At Seattle Children's Hospital Research Institute, their goal is to bring family-centered care into the research arena by promoting understanding and fully involving families throughout the research process.

Under the leadership of James B. Hendricks, PHD., President of the Research Institute, a plan has been put in motion for the Institute to become a worldwide leader in pediatric research. Seattle's reputation as a leading force in biotechnology attracts the world's best pediatric physicians and scientists to the Institute.

In October 2006, the Institute acquired four acres and nearly 1.5 million sq. feet of useable space in two adjacent buildings in downtown Seattle. Over the next several years, the plan is to expand to ultimately 500 new researchers collaborating in bench research and clinical trials. The Research campus is located in the heart of Seattle's biotechnology community; close to their key partners, the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

At the forefront of pediatric research, Seattle Children's Hospital Research Institute conducts research under nine major interdisciplinary centers and is internationally recognized for its discoveries in cancer, genetics, health services, immunology, pathology, infectious disease and vaccines. In the future, the Research Institute will also be known for its work in the area of Mitochondrial Disease as they continue to invest in one of the fastest growing areas of medicine.
The mission of the Research Institute is that all children have unique needs and should grow up without illness or injury. With the support of the community and through their spirit of inquiry, the Research Institute will prevent, treat and eliminate pediatric disease. Their vision is to be a worldwide leader in pediatric research aimed at improving the health and well being of people of all ages.
